Members of the HOWS team attended the Clean Water Modelling Advisory Group (CwMAG)’s annual autumn conference in Nottingham last week. Bringing together members of the modelling community from across the UK water industry, the conference was an ideal opportunity to present progress on the project to date and engage with industry experts.
Drs Matt Johns and David Walker gave a talk in which they outlined the aims of the project and spoke about the issues they anticipated, both in terms of technical implementation of the HOWS platform and attitudes to optimisation within the water industry.
The talk generated significant interest from the assembled delegates, with an engaging question and answer session following. HOWS impact manager Alan Denbigh, who attended the event, said “David and Matt did a great presentation CwMAG 2017. They got a good range of questions which supported the project's raison d'etre; that optimisation is needed and not yet fully used - plus one questioner described the explanation of evolutionary algorithms as 'the best he'd ever seen'. So far, so good!”.
As part of their talk, the team introduced the HOWS survey, which is intended to gather information on the use of automated optimisation tools within the water industry. The results of the survey will inform the team's work - Engineers, practitioners and managers of clean water networks are encouraged to complete the questionnaire here.
